A Catalogue of Solar System Bodies

Sun:  Sol is a yellow-orange, main sequence dwarf star of spectral type G2 V. Born in our Milky Way galaxy's disk about 4.6 billion years ago, it may shine as a normal "dwarf" star for another five billion years. It is relatively rich in elements heavier than hydrogen created by primordial supernovas, and so is called a high metallicity, "Population I" star. Even so, Sol is composed of mostly hydrogen and helium. All other elements amount to only about one tenth of a percent, but this is changing slowly over time as Sol converts more hydrogen to helium then to traces of other elements at its core.
Mercury:  The closest planet has a very elliptical (or eccentric) orbit and swings from only 46 million km (29 million miles) from the Sun at perihelion out to 70 million km (43.5 million miles) at aphelion. Mercury's orbit around Sol takes only about a fourth of an Earth year (about 88 days) to complete. However, it's daily rotation is much slower than Earth's and takes 59 Earth days to complete.
